Anna Tarkov

Hello, Fluxers! I’m the Associate Editor of Flux.

I was born in the former USSR and came here with my family in the summer of 1989 when I was nearly 9 years old. So yes, I speak Russian, but no, I don’t know many swear words, because I was too young to know most of them when we left. I’ve been an American citizen for a long time, but as any immigrant will tell you, we never quite feel at home here, especially if we’re not white, not Christian, or any number of other things that sets us apart from the average American.

Being an immigrant, a woman, a mother, and a Jew are all liminal states. I am neither here nor there and I often feel embattled and uneasy, no matter where I am or who I’m with. It’s difficult and uncomfortable, but it also makes me who I am. I’m learning to be proud of that, even if it’s messy.

Professionally, I haven’t set the world on fire, but I’ve done a few good things (more on that) and one fun and interesting thing.

Personally, I’m happily married and unhappily living in the suburbs of Chicago. I have a son who is autistic and non-verbal. He takes up a lot of my time and headspace, but in return he has made me a much better person and as hard as it all is, I’m grateful for that. He’s also adorable and sweet and I love him more than anything in this whole world.

I hope you enjoy what we’re trying to do here at Flux and I hope you know that feedback is always welcome. You can also always email me directly at anna (at) flux (dot) community.
